HaShem gave us commandments because He knew if He didn't we would be following the ways of satan and doing the things that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were doing. He was trying to keep us on somewhat of a good path by giving us commandments. He knew that even with "free will", there would be people who would break the commandments and there are. Reply

So what is the actual/CLOSEST English word for "commandment" ? Could it be "suggestion" or "recommendation". Any COMMAND, punishable by penalty, is a restriction on "Free Will" I have always believed that HaShem set down His laws as a gift. The reward for following His formula is THE REWARD of having follwed His "suggestion" whereas the purposeful failure to follow those suggestions are in fact the punishment of denying yourself that opportunity of availing yourself of the "reward". Commandment does not reflect the Hebrew. A better translation for "dibrot" is statements.
The general term is mitzvah, which Chassidus explains as "connection," as by following God's word we create a bond in much the same way as children create a good relationship with their parents when they follow their instructions. I do not quite understand why some versions from other cultures of the Ten Commandments would fail to mention that the Jews were freed from slavery in Egypt. Maybe it is considered politically incorrect to even suggest that any of the nations surrounding Israel do not always treat our Jewish people very well.

Now as for the commandment against stealing really only involving a prohibition against kidnapping, I am still stymied by that idea stated by Rashi. For if kidnapping represents the worst kind of stealing, then it is not at all a certain thing that lesser forms of stealing are also prohibited by G-d. But how can that be? Surely the prohibition against all forms of stealing represents one of the core foundations of a just and stable society Reply

1.- My take would be that if you give importance Jesus, as in Christianity - to mention only the first that adopted the 10 from the Greek, would have an effect of diminishing their new beliefs. I have not read the Greek version, do you know if in that it says" that I took you out of Egypt."? Or it says just "anochi"?
2.- I wonder if this omission has to do with the notion "am segulah", and by not mentioning Egypt they take away that concept too? NO preferences, in their opinion. 3.- I would argue it has nothing to do with "political correctness," and all to do with jealousy because H' gave us the Torah first. In this way it is erased. Do not steal,. it had to do with decency: " All stealing counts ! Yet, Rashi points out that he worst is taking a human being because that can also lead to murder! Ken? Reply
